Three Newton residents elected as delegates to the Democratic National Convention

Newton will send three delegates – Newton Democratic City Chair Sharon Stout, former City Councilor Holly Ryan, and high-school senior Alan Cai – to the National Democratic Convention in Chicago, August 19-24. They were elected on Saturday, April 27, at the Massachusetts Fourth Congressional District Caucus, chaired by Rep. Jake Auchincloss, at Newton South High School. Fifty-nine registered Democrats from the Fourth Congressional district — stretching from Brookline to Attleboro — voted. All the candidates pledged to support President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

The Fourth CD is allowed three women delegates, three men, and one woman alternate. In addition to the Newton residents, Julia Leja of Needham, Justin Meszler from Sharon, and Andrew LaBerge from Plainville were elected as delegates, and former Wellesley Democratic Town Committee Chair Susan Ryan was elected the CD 4 alternate. Justin Meszler and Andrew LaBerge are college sophomores.

All nine Massachusetts congressional districts held caucuses that day. Massachusetts will send 116 delegates to Chicago.
