Veloz: Mayor Fuller, end the strike

My partner and I are recent transplants to Auburndale. We love it here, and we’re glad her son was at Williams Elementary and is now at Brown Middle School. The teachers and support staff at both schools have been fantastic, and he’s thrived in all the ways a parent can hope for. I support the teachers. The NTA aren’t striking to enrich themselves or work fewer hours. They are striking for mental health support for the students. They’re striking for better pay for aids and support staff. They are striking for job security. And they are striking for reasonable salary increases. Instead of making concessions, Mayor Fuller never tires of pointing out the strike is illegal, as if there’s a moral high ground here. There is not. If you let teachers work long enough without a contract that they are forced to strike, you have already lost. There is no path to victory here. The path forward is negotiation and compromise. Mayor Fuller, our kids need to be back in school tomorrow. End the strike.
