The Newton Teachers Association held a rally on the steps of the Newton City Hall War Memorial on Saturday, January 27. A crowd approaching 2000 people – including teachers, parents, students, as well as supporters from area schools and labor organizations – gathered to protest the lack of progress in ongoing contract negotiations between the Newton School Committee and the Newton Teachers Association.

Photos from the event (see full-screen slideshow) show various homemade signs, many of which were critical of Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller and the School Committee.

Newton Ward 5 City Councilor Bill Humphrey spoke to the crowd of being the only City Councilor supporting the teachers and concluded his remarks, in an apparent reference to Mayor Fuller, saying, “If we want to do things differently – if we want to do things better – the unemployment in this city only has to go up by one more person.”
