What’s Up in Newton – Week of 10/15/2023

City Council

City Council will meet on Monday and is expected to vote on the following:

  • Extension of time to exercise a previously approved special permit at #260-22 at 34, 36, 38, 48, 50 Crafts Street, 19-21 Court Street – Crafts Street Elderly Housing with Services proposal
  • Waiver of dimensional requirements to expand a detached accessory building for use as an accessory apartment at 193 Lake Avenue
  • Construction of a one- story addition and exceed FAR at 93 Ruane Road
  • Demolition of existing attached garage, first and second story additions, and parking in the front setback at 70 Kingswood Road
  • Construction of a two-story warehouse and waiver of dimensional requirements at 0 Rumford Avenue
  • Addition of 48 patio seats and removal of eight parking stalls at 9-13 Kenneth Street, 29 Kenneth Street, 118 Needham Street, and 122 Needham Street
  • No Action Necessary on discussion regarding the security measures and any incidents during the 2023 Boston Marathon. See Fig City News articles here and here.
  • Denial of petition request to repeal overnight winter parking ban. See Fig City News articles here and here.
  • Grant of location to install and maintain gas main in Ward Street
  • Denial of request to establish and appropriate funds to an Operations Booster Stabilization Fund – See Fig City News article and Finance Committee Report.
  • Transfer of $50,000 from Water Services Connections – Full-Time Wages to settle workers compensation claim

New Docket includes the following requests:

  • Extension of time to exercise previously approved special permit for detached accessory structure at 35 Bracebridge
  • Amend a previously approved special permit to allow a Medical Marijuana Treatment Center at 1089 Washington Street
  • Rezoning certain manufacturing districts adjacent to the village of Nonantum
  • Update on Short-term Rental ordinance compliance and enforcement
  • Prohibit the sale or distribution of single use plastic beverage containers by the City of Newton and Newton Public Schools
  • Discuss the Sustainable Materials Management Director’s Report: Recommendations to Rethink Curbside Collection Services
  • Accept of $99,992 grant funding for the Cheesecake Brook Subwatershed Planning and Best Management Practice Design Project
  • Transfer $300,000 from Reserve Funds-Budget Reserve – Phase III Gath Memorial Pool Renovation Project

Land Use will meet on Tuesday:

  • Two consistency ruling requests:
    • 80 Highland Avenue – alter front setback for detached accessory structure
    • 1198 Chesnut Street – allow rear facing third-story balcony
  • One-story addition and further extend nonconforming FAR at 211 Dorset Road
  • Parking in the front setback and within five feet of the front lot line at 97 Waban Hill Road North
  • Change from a nonconforming two-family dwelling use to two single-family dwellings on one lot at 373 Lexington Street
  • Three single-family attached dwellings at 0 Jewett Place and 15-17 Jewett Place
  • Six single-family attached dwellings in three buildings at 280 Nevada Street

Programs and Services will meet on Wednesday to consider two items on vibration control:

  • Possible creation of an ordinance requiring control measures for by-right and special permit projects
  • Study, analysis, review of vibration standards related to construction projects as they affect neighboring buildings

Public Facilities will meet on Wednesday:

  • Request for a grant of location in Grove Street to relocate facilities for the MBTA
  • Request for a grant of location to install and maintain gas main in Chestnut Hill Road
  • Request for an update on Sustainable Materials Management Director’s report: Recommendations to Rethink Curbside Collection Services
  • Updates from Public Building’s Commissioner on the Countryside, Lincoln Eliot, Franklin, and Horace Mann Elementary School Projects.
  • Request from the Community Preservation Committee to appropriate $1,200,000 for a total of $7,034,362 for Phase III of the Gath Memorial Renovation Project
  • Request to transfer $300,000 from Reserve Funds-Budget Reserve to complete the Phase III Gath Memorial Pool Renovation Project – FF&E and contingency

Public Safety and Transportation meeting has been canceled.

Schools

School Committee will meet in Executive Session on Wednesday to discuss strategy with respect to collective bargaining with the Newton Teachers Association Units A-E, NESA, and Custodians

City Council released this Statement in support of Israel.

Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) will hold a hearing on an appeal of the Auburndale Historic District Commission’s decision to approve a Certificate of Appropriateness for 24 Robin Dell Road on Tuesday, October 17 at 7PM at Lasell Village, 120 Seminary Avenue, Newton in the Froebel Room.
