City Council, School Committee: Who has pulled papers?

Beginning in the first week in May, candidates for City Council and School Committee may take out nomination papers and begin collecting signatures for the November 7th election.  Nomination papers are due at Newton City Hall on Tuesday, July 25.

All 16 incumbent At-Large members of the Newton City Council have taken out nomination papers, and thus far, all are running unopposed. 

  • Ward 1: Alison Leary and John Oliver
  • Ward 2: Council President Susan Albright and Tarik Lucas
  • Ward 3: Andrea Kelley and Pam Wright
  • Ward 4: Lenny Gentile and Josh Krintzman
  • Ward 5: Deb Crossley and Andreae Downs
  • Ward 6: Vicki Danberg and Alicia Bowman
  • Ward 7: Marc Laredo and Becky Grossman
  • Ward 8: Rick Lipof and David Kalis

Among the eight Ward Councilors (elected by voters from within each ward), four incumbents have already taken out papers, and one other is planning to do so.  Three current Ward councilors are not seeking re-election.

  • Ward 1: Maria Scibelli Greenberg  is planning to take out papers.
  • Ward 3: Julia Malakie has taken out papers.
  • Ward 5: Bill Humphrey has taken out papers.
  • Ward 7: Lisle Baker has taken out papers.
  • Ward 8: Holly Ryan has taken out papers.
  • Ward 2 incumbent , Emily Norton, is not seeking re-election.  David Micley has taken out papers.
  • Ward 4 incumbent, Chris Markiewicz is not running for re-election.  No one has taken out papers in for his seat.
  • Ward 6 incumbent Brenda Noel is not running for re-election.  Martha Bixby and John J.Lovett, III have taken out papers to run for her seat.

Among the eight incumbents on the School Committee, thus far five are running for re-election with no opponent, and two seats have no candidate.

  • Ward 1: Rajeev Parliker is running.
  • Ward 2: Chris Brezski is running.
  • Ward 3: Anping Shen is running.
  • Ward 4; Tamika Olszewski (Chair) is running.
  • Ward 5: Emily Prenner is running.
  • Ward 8: Cove Johnstone Davis has not yet taken out papers.
  • Ward 6: Paul Levy, the incumbent, is not running for re-election and no-one has taken out papers for his seat.
  • Ward 7: Kathy Shields is not running for re-election and no-one has take out papers for her seat.

Several others have indicated they are thinking of running for City Council, but are still considering their options.
