$272,000 MassDOT Community Connections Program grant for Bluebike stations

The City of Newton, along with Arlington and Watertown, entered into an agreement with MassDOT to purchase, install, and operate 8 or 9 additional Bluebike bike-share stations in the three communities. The communities were awarded a $272,000 grant from MassDOT’s Community Connections Program to support these stations. The project was to begin in February 2022 and be completed by the end of this September. The proposed locations that are in Newton included:

  • Auburndale Center at the Commuter Rail Station
  • Watertown and Albemarle — to serve Albemarle Field, Gath Pool, and Charles River Park
  • Needham Street — to serve MBTA bus stops and the commercial corridor

According to a memo from the Director of Transportation Planning, Nicole Freedman, the City is likely to add two more Bluebike bike-share stations as part of this project. Currently, there are 13 Bluebike stations throughout the City. Newton’s Public Safety and Transportation Committee will discuss and formally accept this grant at its virtual meeting (Zoom link) on Thursday, September 8 at 7PM.
