In memory of David Sellers, Sr., former Executive Director of Newton’s Boys & Girls Club

David Sellers, Sr.,72, the former Executive Director of the John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club, who died at home on August 26, was the ultimate community man. He was born in Newton, and most of his life centered on the Newton Boys & Girls Club – called the Boys Club when he was a young participant in the 1960s.

Through the Club, generations of children have found a safe, welcoming place to go after school or on summer vacation. At the Club, Dave was a teen athlete who became a coach, athletic director, and finally Executive Director. During his tenure, the Boys Club became the Boys & Girls Club, built the current Watertown Street club facility, and added arts and education options to its curriculum. For children and parents looking for a safe, caring, nurturing environment, David Sellers and the Boys & Girls Club had the answer. His son, David Sellers, Jr., succeeded him as Executive Director and carries on his legacy today.

In addition to his devotion to the Boys & Girls Club, “Big Dave” Sellers was a member of the Newton Rotary and Sons of Italy.
