What’s Up in Newton – Week of 2/11/2024

City Council

City Council will hold a joint meeting with the School Committee on Monday to discuss the State of the Schools. See Newton Public Schools presentation [UPDATED version].

Finance Committees regularly scheduled meeting has been canceled.

Zoning and Planning will meet on Thursday:

  • Discussion regarding Committee work plan for 2024-2025 term.
  • Quarterly updates on any potential projects brought to the Planning Department under the new Village Center Overlay District. See Planning Memo.
  • Discussion/possible amendments to Chapter 30 Zoning or other City Ordinances to enhance the preservation of existing homes over their replacement. See Planning Memo.
  • Discussion/possible ordinance amendments that would revise the metrics in the multi-residence (MR1, MR2 and MR3) zones, to regulate the size of new buildings better, enable a wider range of housing options close to public transit, and better incentivize preservation and renovation of existing housing stock. See Planning Memo.
  • Discussion/possible ordinance amendment to deal with grade changes created during construction. See Planning Memo.
  • Discussion/implementation of a public reporting process for key metrics relevant to the Planning Department.

Traffic Council will meet on Thursday:

  • Removal of the accessible parking space at 432 Lowell Avenue.
  • Stop sign at the intersection of Temple Street, southbound, at Fuller Street
  • Stop sign at the end of the Peirce Elementary School parking lot, southbound, at the intersection of Ruane Road.

School Committee

School Committee will meet jointly with the City Council on Monday to discuss the State of the Schools. See Newton Public Schools presentation.

Boards and Commissions

Newton Free Library Board of Trustees Nominating and Governance Committees will meet on Monday regarding Director Evaluation Questionnaires, Selection for staff interview, and Library Director’s self – evaluation.

Board of License Commissioners will hold a special virtual meeting on Monday regarding a one-day temporary wine and malt license for a Valetine’s Day craft workshop on Tuesday, February 13 from 7PM – 8:30PM at the Durant-Kenrick House and Grounds.

Newton Free Library Trustee Strategic Planning Steering Committee will meet on Monday to review Quote Request language and plan next meeting.

Commission on Disability will meet on Monday:

  • CDBG Report; Accessible Fines Reports; Treasurer’s Report; ADA Coordinator’s Report

Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a site visit on Tuesday, February 13 at 8AM at 78 Crafts Street regarding the Comprehensive Permit application to view the existing site conditions the include 78-84 Crafts Street, 68-70 Crafts Street, 9 Maguire Court, 24 Maguire Court, 31 Maguire Court, and 31R Maguire Court and to view the area where approximately 307 units of rental housing will be located. Design Review Committee/Franklin School and Horace Mann School Building Committees will meet on Wednesday:
