City Council Meetings – Week of 1/14/2024

City Council Chairs will meet in person (Room 204) and virtually (Zoom link) on Tuesday, January 16 at 6:30PM. The agenda includes the following:

Programs and Services will meet virtually (Zoom link) on Wednesday, January 17 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following:

City Council will meet in person (Council Chamber) and virtually (Zoom link) on Tuesday, January 16 at 7:45PM, live broadcast on NewTV’s government channel (Comcast 9, RCN 13, 614HD, Verizon 33) and NewTV’s Youtube channel. See Reports Docket and New Docket.

  • Discussion of a work plan of the Committee for the new 2024-2025 term.
  • Request to set early voting hours for the March 5, 2024 Presidential Primary on the following dates, location (Newton City Hall) and times recommended by the Election Commission (total of 7 days):
    • Saturday February 24: 11AM-5PM
    • Sunday February 25: 11AM-5PM
    • Monday February 26: 8:30AM-5PM
    • Tuesday February 27: 8:30AM-5PM
    • Wednesday February 28: 8:30AM-8PM
    • Thursday February 29: 8:30AM-5PM
    • Friday March 1: 8:30AM-5PM.
  • Request for a resolution urging the City to avoid the purchase or use of products containing PFAS
  • Request to appropriate $925,000 of June 30, 2023 Certified Free Cash for the purpose of funding curriculum materials for Newton Public Schools
  • Reappointment of Jane Brown to the Human Rights Commission

Public Safety and Transportation will meet virtually (Zoom link) on Wednesday, January 17 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following:

  • Request to amend Chapter 10-28 of Newton Ordinances to change the number of Deputy Chiefs in the Fire Department from 5 to 6.
  • Discussion of a work plan of the Committee for the new 2024-2025 term.

Public Facilities will meet in person (Room 204) and virtually (Zoom link) on Wednesday, January 17 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following requests:

  • Water main extension and main drain extension, and granting of water easement and main drain easement in Chapin Road, which is required as part of the approved subdivision Certificate of Action.
  • Approval for a Conceptual Design for the Washington Street Pilot project
  • Appropriate $11,475,000 of June 30, 2023 Certified Free Cash to fund NPS and municipal infrastrucure (see list)

Traffic Council will meet virtually (Zoom link) on Thursday, January 18 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following requests:

  • An accessible parking space near or in front of 9 Murphy Court
  • An accessible parking space at or near 5 Murphy Court
  • A ‘STOP’ sign at the Station Avenue northbound approach to Lake Avenue
  • Add a 20 mph Safety Zone on Lowell from Elmwood Park to Claflin Park
  • Changes to the TPR for the following two dead-end segments of the Commonwealth Avenue carriageway: between Robinhood Street and Rowe Street, and between Arapahoe Road and Windermere Road. Two-way traffic circulation will officially be permitted and parking will be restricted on one side of these two segments.
  • Update the Traffic and Parking Regulations in order to allow nonmotorized vehicles (bicycles) to legally travel southbound on the one-way northbound block of Brookside Avenue between Watertown Street and Albemarle Road
  • Modify the parking regulations on Lowell Avenue near the intersection of Austin Street to reflect recent construction at the intersection.
