Pruente: RightSize Newton on zoning ordinance

The zoning ordinance proposal currently before the City Council has become a very controversial piece of legislation. The voters indicated their displeasure in the municipal election held last Tuesday, Nov. 7 when three incumbents who favor this legislation – Alicia Bowman, Deborah Crossley, and Holly Ryan — were all defeated.

Their opponents all endorsed the idea of passing zoning legislation which would meet the MBTA Community Act requirement of 8,330 additional units but postponing a vote on any other zoning changes pending further discussion and analysis. This approach was outlined in a memo from nine City Councilors to Mayor Fuller on August 11, 2023 found here.

We respectfully ask the City Council pause any changes beyond what is necessary to comply with the MBTA Communities Act. This would lower the temperature regarding this issue, and it would send a signal to the voters that they have heard the voter’s concerns.

Sincerely,

Diane Pruente
