Newton Police Capt. William Spalding has died

The Newton Police Department announced on Facebook on Thursday evening that Capt. William L. Spalding died suddenly on November 1. He was described by Mayor Ruthanne Fuller as a loving man with a “broad smile.”

The 25-year Newton Police veteran, who began his career in the city on April 13, 1998, “leaves behind a grieving family, including his wife, three children, parents as well as many, many friends spread across Newton, Framingham and beyond,” according to the Mayor’s statement to the City Council.

“Captain Spalding was a well-respected veteran of the Newton Police. … He will be deeply missed by our department and community,” said Chief John Carmichael in the announcement about the captain’s death.

“Having grown up in Newton, he was exceptionally dedicated to our community,” said Mayor Fuller.

As of Friday night, numerous police departments from throughout the state and many others had sent their condolences to the Newton Police via Facebook. “As word of this tragedy has spread throughout our department, Newton and the Framingham communities, we are grateful and honored to experience the outpouring of support for Captain Spalding and his family,” said Carmichael. No details on funeral arrangements were available as of Friday night.
