As NPS/NTA contract mediation sessions begin, still no outcome from September 8 hearing on NTA work actions

Additional Post-Hearing Filing Submitted by School Committee on September 12

Despite expectations of both the School Committee and the Newton Teachers Association of a faster state ruling on the School Committee’s September 5th petition for the NTA to cease-and-desist “Work-to-Rule” activities, as of this writing, no determination has been made.

On September 12, the School Committee, via its counsel, submitted a Post-Hearing Memorandum “in response to the request by the [Commonwealth].” The 45-page document, posted on the Massachusetts Department of Labor Relations website, describes in great detail the School Committee’s timeline of events regarding the August 30 boycott of the NPS convocation, as well as the case law that it feels is relevant to its petition.

Alongside the parties’ waiting for a ruling on the legality of certain aspects of Work-to-Rule, mediation sessions began this week between the School Committee and NTA. The NTA has asked its members for volunteers to act as “silent observers” during the mediation.’

The next School Committee meeting will be on September 27.
