What’s Up in Newton this week – 7/30/2023

The City will host a virtual forum on Domestic Violence TONIGHT, 6PM – 7PM on Zoom. The event is free, and guests are welcome to join anonymously.

City Council

Zoning and Planning will meet TONIGHT on several appointments/reappointments, discussion on request to rezone property on Charles Street, review and discussion on Village Center Zoning including a presentation by staff and Utile of potential development using the Village Center Overlay Districts along particular streets in Newton and a presentation by Councilor Wright on a tool she developed to quantify unit capacity.

Schools

Franklin School Building Committee will meet on Thursday for a project update and review of the pre-feasibility options that were developed in 2022 and an introduction and discussion of the Franklin School Building Evaluation Criteria Matrix.

Boards and Commissions

Zoning Board of Appeals will meet on Monday to continue the public hearing on the Northland/Charlemont 40B application and to review a request for a variance for the construction of a sports court constructed within a rear setback (564 Dedham Street).

Fair Housing Committee will meet on Wednesday to review a Cambridge study on resident experiences of inclusion and bias in inclusionary housing, to receive updates from subcommittees, and to discuss its housing priorities.

Farm Commission will meet on Thursday to discuss operations, financials, and insurance, and to receive updates on solar infrastructure, DEI/EBT, and security.

Newton Highlands Area Council will meet on Thursday to discuss availability of nomination papers and procedures for the Area Council election, debate planning for the Ward 6 Councilor preliminary elections, safety on Lincoln Street, an update on the Levingston Cove Project and Zoning redesign, and development of a potential newsletter.

Newtonville Historic District Commission will meet on Thursday to review two violations: installation of a shed at 203-205 Walnut Street, Unit 203 and work done on the main house exceeding what had been permitted at 34 Prescott Street.
