Races set: Few challengers, but Sept. 12 preliminary elections needed

Now that the deadline has passed for candidates to file, the Newton Election Commission has reported that in Wards 1, 3, and 7, there will be no challengers to any of the current City Council and School Committee incumbents. In fact, none of the School Committee members have challengers.

In Ward 1, the unchallenged Council incumbents are:

  • Alison Leary and John Oliver, At-Large
  • Maria Scibeli Greenberg, Ward councilor.

In Ward 3, the unchallenged Council incumbents are:

  • Andrea Kelley and Pam Wright, At-Large
  • Julia Anne Malakie, Ward councilor

In Ward 7, the unchallenged incumbents are:

  • Marc Laredo and Rebecca Walker Grossman, At-Large
  • Lisle Baker, Ward Councilor

Both Ward 2 At-Large Councilors are unchallenged incumbents:

  • Susan Albright (Council President) and Tarik Lucas are unchallenged

In the Ward 2 Ward race, there are three candidates vying for the seat that Emily Norton is leaving, so a September 12th preliminary election is needed:

  • Peter Bruce, David Micley, and Daniel Gaynor are running.

Both Ward 4 At-Large candidates are unchallenged incumbents:

  • Lenny Gentile and Josh Krintzman

Ward 4 Ward Councilor Chris Markiewicz is retiring, and there are two challengers for that seat:

  • Doris Ann Sweet and Randall Block

For Ward 5 Ward Councilor, incumbent Bill Humphrey is unchallenged.

In the race for two At-Large Ward 5 Councilor seats, Rena Getz is challenging incumbents Deb Crossley and Andreae Downs.

In Ward 6, Alan Lobovits is challenging incumbent At-Large Councilors Vicki Danberg and Alicia Bowman.

The Ward 6 Ward seat, soon to be vacated by Brenda Noel, has three challengers, so there will be a preliminary election on September 12th:

  • Martha Bixby, Mark Holt, and Lisa Gordon.

Incumbent Ward 8 At-Large Councilors Rick Lipof (City Council Vice President) and David Kalis are unchallenged.

Ward 8 Ward Councilor Holly Ryan is being challenged by Stephen Farrell.

With no challengers, the next Newton School Committee will be:

  • Ward 1 Rajeev Parliker
  • Ward 2 Chris Brezski
  • Ward 3 Anping Shen
  • Ward 4 Tamika Olszewski
  • Ward 5 Emily Prenner
  • Ward 6 Paul Levy
  • Ward 7 Amy Davenport
  • Ward 8 Barry Greenstein
