What’s Up in Newton — Week of 7/17/2022

The Land Use Committee and Planning and Development Board are scheduled to open public hearings on two large projects: 11 Florence Street – Sunrise Senior Living Proposal and 1314 Washington Street – former Santander Bank on Tuesday, July 19 at 6:00 PM (see agenda).

The Design Review Committee (DRC) will meet this week to “confirm that the DRC continues to support the latest site plan” for NewCAL, given the recent announcement regarding the proposed acquisition — by purchase or friendly eminent domain — of the two-family home and property located at 47 Walnut Place abutting the NewCAL location at the Newton Senior Center (see agenda).

On Wednesday, July 20, the School Committee’s Negotiation Subcommittee will meet in Executive Session to discuss strategy related to contracts with the Newton Teachers Association (see Meeting Notice).

Remote meetings and remote public access to meetings are queued up to continue through next year. According to a Open Meetings Law guidance post on the Attorney General’s website, “On the evening of July 14, 2022, the House and Senate each passed a bill extending certain COVID-19 related measures including provisions regarding holding remote meetings and remote public access to meetings. The provisions in the bill pertaining to the Open Meeting Law and remote meetings, which were set to expire on July 15, 2022, would be extended to March 31, 2023. The bill is before the Governor and will take effect immediately upon signing.”

State Senator Cynthia Stone Creem recently announced that she was successful in securing an $85 million bond authorization within this Transportation Bond Bill passed by the Senate, that would be used toward accessibility improvements for Newton’s three commuter rail stations. She applauded State Representative Khan for her years of advocacy and commitment to this project.
