Last Monday I attended the Martin Luther King, Jr. event at Newton North High School.
What a wonderful tribute to a man who worked tirelessly to make all of us aware of the plight of not only Black people but also the poor. If Dr. King had lived longer I am sure he would have included the disabled as well.
I know that the event was intended to make us aware of the disparity of experience between Black and white people in Newton, and I think the program did a wonderful job of that. But when I heard all the speakers talking about how we have to make sure our Black students get the best education, and feel included, I wonder about the kids who are struggling with various disabilities. What do you want for them? What I want for them is to be included. Where was someone to sign for those deaf and hard of hearing kids? If you are going to use the word “inclusion” you must also remember to include those who are challenged in other ways than their race.
When I hear stories about kids with disabilities being left out, it breaks my heart. I look forward to the day when we can include all those who struggle, because I feel that Martin Luther King, Jr. would have wanted all people to be raised up.
