Heiman: Let’s have a Kids Council

In this week’s election one of the groups that will be most affected didn’t even get to vote! Like me! I am a Newton Public Schools middle schooler and I use the city’s fields and libraries and parks but don’t get to make any decisions about them. But I have a solution. I am proposing something called Kids Council.

Kids ages 14-18 will make up the Kids Council. All kids, kindergarten through high school, will be able to vote for the members of Kids Council. The idea of Kids Council is that all of the Kids Council members combined would get to have one vote on the City Council, but only on issues that directly affect kids (parks, fields, libraries, schools, etc.). This would help because it would give kids a way to represent themselves and be able to have a say, even if small. Kids Council could help me and my friends because we have a lot of ideas about easy changes to help the community — and help kids – but are not able to express it in any way.

Overall I think that Kids Council would be a very successful project and a great way for kids to be able to help their community and their friends.
