Mountain: Setti Warren, a friend who will be missed

Setti Warren was that rare liberal politician who made it a point to befriend the Newton Republicans, to make us feel part of Newton, for which we were grateful.

When he first ran for Mayor we gave him our tacit support. He was, after all, a veteran who had just served in Iraq. While his opponent was a progressive. He won by just over 300 votes and credited the Republicans for his victory.

Setti asked the Newton Republican City Committee to set up and run CarePacks for Soldiers serving in war zones. He entrusted us with this important task, because he knew we’d do it right.

His numerous appearances at Newton events honoring our veterans and memorializing our soldiers were both heartfelt… and personal.

He gave us his full support as we planned, funded, and built the Newton 9/11 Memorial over a decade ago. With the result that his inspiring message is engraved on our memorial.

Setti cared deeply for Newton, the city in which he lived his entire life. He was sincere, cordial, congenial. A perfect gentleman. He was a friend — our friend — and he will be missed.
