The City is no longer delaying trash/recycling pickup on weeks that have these holidays:
- Indigenous Peoples’ Day (Oct. 13, 2025)
- Veterans Day (Nov. 11, 2025)
- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (Jan. 9, 2026)
- President’s Day (Feb. 19, 2026)
Residents should set out trash, recycling, and yard waste on regular trash day for these weeks.
If you miss the collection, you’ll need to wait until the following week for pickup. Collection crews will not be able to come back the same week if carts are not set out by 7AM on regular trash days during the weeks of these holidays.
In the past, Newton delayed trash and recycling pickup for all federal holidays, a practice that started when City staff performed collection and had those holidays off. But in recent years, delaying pickup has created more challenges than benefits.
Holiday delays mean Saturday service is always required, leaving contracted staff with less time off and creating frequent confusion for residents about when to set out their trash. Delays have also made it harder to respond during storms and other disruptions.
To make collection more efficient and predictable, Newton will now delay curbside services only on the following holidays:
New Year’s Day, Patriot’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.
On all other holidays, collection will take place on your regular pickup day.
