My name is Analise Castillo, and I live in Newton Upper Falls. I write to you to express my wholehearted support for my neighbor, Garry Miller, in his campaign for Newton City Council, Ward 5. I hope to offer insight as someone who has known him personally for nearly two decades.
I moved to Newton at 8 years old, in 2008. At first, Garry was just a friendly neighbor across the street. He, my mother, and I would convene on our sidewalk for weekly chats. Garry always led with curiosity, posing thoughtful questions about my interests and career aspirations. Often, he’d guide the conversation to topical issues facing Newton. For as long as I can remember, he’s held a deep passion for our local goings-on.
Over time, Garry’s presence in our neighborhood has undeniably grown. Garry has welcomed us into his garden to pick herbs and flowers anytime; I learned from him how to welcome others into this community. As I grew older and realized I was gay, Garry and his husband Tim served as a crucial model for what a healthy, joyful LGBTQ+ marriage can look like; I learned from them how to live proudly. On occasion, I’ve cared for Garry’s cats; they are the sweetest creatures I’ve ever met – a quiet testament to the kindness in Garry’s character.
After Garry’s father passed, just over one month ago, Garry wrote to me, unprompted, thanking me for being a good neighbor all these years. It’s safe to say – I’ve learned from him how to express gratitude with an open heart.
Through this letter, I seek not only to reciprocate my gratitude, but to do my part to invest in the wellbeing of our city. And so, I fully support Garry Miller’s candidacy for Newton City Council.
