I am writing in support of Garry Miller’s candidacy for Ward 5 Councilor. I am committed to leaving my children a world in which they and their peers can thrive. To do this, we need to leave them a world in the first place — one with a livable climate for everyone. And it should be a just world, one where everyone can fully participate in civic life. I want my kids to see, work toward, and benefit from a culture focused on inclusivity, compassion, and community. That is why I support Garry Miller for Ward 5 City Counselor.
Garry believes in sustainable, transit-oriented city planning. With Garry’s help, we will address the twin challenges posed by the climate crisis and housing costs. By concentrating growth near public transportation, we will reduce emissions while creating vibrant neighborhoods where families can walk to shops, schools, and community spaces. Housing affordability will benefit from the creation of greater housing stock, allowing seniors, teachers, and the next generation to move or stay here. And dense village cores will attract more businesses to Newton, generating the tax revenue our schools need to maintain their focus on excellence as well as equity. Following this path, Newton can serve as a model for the kind of community we need across the nation to meet today’s pressing climate and affordability challenges.
Further, Garry’s vision of creating cross-sectional community groups across Newton will get us talking to one another again. Facilitating an appreciation for one another’s perspectives will help us see across our divisions to allow our city to achieve all of our common goals.
Garry has the vision, temperament, and experience needed to lead our city in this political moment. I urge my Ward 5 neighbors to vote for Garry Miller on Election Day.
Sincerely,
Tom Brown
