Ward 1 School Committee candidate Christie Lee Gibson withdraws from race

Christie Lee Gibson, one of the two candidates running for School Committee in the competitive Ward 1 race, sent an email to her supporters Sunday night, September 7, saying that she was withdrawing from the race. Her withdrawal leaves Arrianna Prioa without an active opponent in that race, meaning Ms. Proia will almost certainly represent Ward 1 on the 2026-2027 School Committee. As Ms. Gibson notes in her withdrawal, her name will remain on the November ballot, since the ballot has already been certified by the City Clerk. (The deadline for requesting removal from the ballot was August 7.)

Ms. Gibson’s withdrawal message was posted on her campaign website and sent to Fig City News. It is reprinted below.

Dear Fellow Newtonians,

As I’ve gone through the political process, I have realized that continuing with my campaign for School Committee this season will take an undue negative toll on my family. Therefore, I am withdrawing my nomination for Ward 1 School Committee member. I’ve enjoyed talking to people across the city and learning about your experiences with the schools. To the many people who have offered your time and support, I am deeply thankful for your goodwill and generosity. I look forward to continuing to support the schools in other ways. Please note that even though I am withdrawing my name from the race, I will still be on the ballot.

Thank you again for all your support,

Christie Gibson
