Traffic Council – July 31, 2025

The Traffic Council Approved the following (see report and watch the meeting video):

  • Norwood Avenue (5–0) Parking changes in Newtonville designed to improve safety and emergency access. Parking is prohibited on the south side, allowed on the north side, with an added school-day restriction on the last block. Residents and councilors supported the plan, noting it balanced school needs and neighborhood safety.
  • 149 North Street (5–0) An accessible parking space will be created in front of Newton Gardens, supported by the Commission on Disability.
  • Eldredge Street (5–0) Changed the east-side restriction between Franklin and Church Streets to allow resident permit parking during restricted afternoon hours, providing abutters with greater flexibility while maintaining overall traffic controls.
  • Albemarle Road (5–0) Parking prohibited on the east and south sides of the narrow one-way portion between Watertown Street and Eddy Street to ensure that fire trucks and buses can pass safely.
  • Lowell Avenue (5–0) Parking prohibited on the very narrow 18-foot-wide dead-end section east of Prescott Street. Neighbors raised concerns about blocked driveways and emergency vehicle access, which this change addresses.
  • Horace Mann Neighborhood Parking District (5–0) The district, created in 2014 as a temporary measure during school swing space use, was removed. Simplified restrictions now apply on Nevada and Linwood Streets, intending to ease resident use and reducing unnecessary permitting.

The Traffic Council determined No Action Necessary for the following:

  • Norwood Avenue (original petition) (5-0) as the broader review of the entire street was completed under the approved Norwood Avenue item.
  • Woodbine and Bourne Streets (5–0) A proposal to allow some business employee parking permits that was opposed by residents. Councilors instead emphasized better use of existing Auburndale Business Parking Zones for employees of nearby businesses.

Attendees included Councilors Lipof, Krintzman, Malakie, and Oliver; State Representative Amy Sangiolo; city staff from the Transportation Division, Parking, Economic Development, and ADA office; and resident members of the Traffic Council, chaired by David Koses.
