Nomination papers for Area Council elections, due Sept. 22

Elections for Newton’s four Area CouncilsNewton Highlands, Newton Upper Falls, Newtonville, and Waban — are held every other year, along with elections for other municipal offices (this year, on November 4).

Registered voters living in the catchment areas denoted on the map above may run for a seat on their Area Council. Nomination papers are now available at the City Clerk’s office and must be returned by 5PM on September 22 with signatures of voters in candidate’s Area Council catchment area. At least 25 signatures verified by the City Clerk’s office are required to get on the ballot.

In the municipal election (including mail-in voting and early voting), the members of each Area Council are elected by voters living in that Area Council’s catchment area.

The Area Councils are official bodies in Newton’s local government, established by the City charter. They are set up to address local issues and to facilitate communication between residents and the rest of City government. (In addition to the City’s web pages, Newtonville and Waban also have their own websites.)
