The ballot for Newton’s November 4 municipal election has been finalized, after recent decisions by candidates.
Councilors Rick Lipof (Ward 8) and Alan Lobovits (Ward 6) withdrew from their races on August 7, the last day to do so.
- Councilor Lipof’s withdrawal leaves the race uncontested and ensures that incumbent David Kalis and newcomer Jason Silber will be the Ward 8 Councilors at Large.
- Councilor Lobovits’s withdrawal leaves three candidates for the two Ward 6 At-Large seats.
Earlier, in Ward 4, Cyrus Dahmubed decided to run for Councilor-at-Large, against first-time candidate James Chaimanis and incumbent Josh Krintzman — three candidates for two seats. Dahmubed’s dropping out of the Ward Councilor race ensures that Randy Block will run unopposed for that seat.
Candidates for municipal office were required to file nomination papers, with signatures to be certified, with the City Clerk by 4:59PM on July 22. Candidates had until August 7 to withdraw, so the ballot is now set.
There will be contested elections only for:
- Mayor
- Two Councilor-At-Large races (Ward 4 and 6)
- Two Ward Councilor races (Wards 1 and 5)
- Five School Committee races (Wards 1, 2, 5, 6, and 8)
Key: In the accompanying table of candidates:
- Uncontested elections are shaded gray and contested elections are shaded white.
- Non-incumbents are shown in bold font.
- Blue links are to candidates’ campaign websites (more to come).

- 6 or 7 of the 16 City Councilors-At-Large
- 1 or 2 of the 8 Ward Councilors
- 6 of the 8 School Committee members
With this array of candidates, a preliminary election in September is not required because there are not more candidates than twice the number of seats in any race.
Ed. Note: We updated this post to include the campaign website for Cyrus Dahmubed and to correct the spelling of K. Garrett Miller’s name.
