MassDOT’s major construction project to replace Mass Pike bridges over the MBTA Commuter Rail near the I-90 / I-95 interchange will cause significant traffic disruption on two upcoming weekends, with a one-night test of the diversion on Friday. During the times noted below, Mass Pike (I-90) traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. MassDOT says: “Significant traffic impacts will be felt between Boston and Framingham.”
Mayor Fuller notes that the two weekend-long restrictions are expected to create backups of 2-3 hours on the Mass Pike and gridlock throughout Newton as traffic spills over to east-west routes of Commonwealth Avenue, Watertown Street, Washington Street, Beacon Street, and Route 9 — and to north-south routes of Chestnut, Walnut, and Centre Streets as well as Waverly and Glen Avenues, and probably many side roads.
[One night] — 10PM Friday, May 2 through 7AM Saturday, May 3: Mass Pike (I-90) traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction for a one-night test of the use of zipper barriers to restrict lane usage during upcoming two weekends of construction. This will not affect Commuter Rail.
[Weekend] — 9PM Friday, May 30 to 5AM Monday, June 2: Mass Pike (I-90) traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Commuter Rail trains will be replaced by bus service.
[Weekend] — 9PM Friday, June 20 to 5AM Monday, June 23: Mass Pike (I-90) traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Commuter Rail trains will be replaced by bus service.
