- Request to amend Special Permit #40-97(2) and allow expansion of a free-standing sign and a third secondary sign at 269-287 Grove Street (7-1, Councilor Block opposed). The existing special permit does not allow them to advertise a restaurant. In the design for this petition, the petitioners have incorporated the Kendall Kitchen logo on the existing stone wall to increase the traffic to the restaurant. They are requesting administrative approval to change the signage when tenants change. One member of the public spoke in opposition at the public hearing, believing the sign would negatively impact the Auburndale Historic District. A councilor noted the original special permit required an annual contribution to the city’s operational inner village bus service (no longer in existence) and continuous operation of a shuttle service. They asked if this has been enforced or amended in the special permit. Chief City Planner Katie Whewell said she would look into this and report back to the committee. The special permit was amended (6-2, Councilors Kelley and Downs opposed) to limit the number of tenant signs to a maximum of 5. Petition Documents Draft Council Order unavailable

(7-0, Councilor Farrell Not Voting) Newton Historic Commission found the current structure was not ‘preferable preserved.’ The new construction will be all electric and will have more than 50% open space.
