Emily Craven — Newton North HS 2022, now studying at University of Vermont — will run the 129th Boston Marathon to raise funds for the Fig City News summer internship program, now in its third year.
Last year, Fig City News was able to hire six student interns, funded by Boston Marathon runner Tami Gambiza and the Rotary Club of Newton. These interns did amazing work for the benefit of the Newton community.
Emily is excited to create the funding for next summer’s interns. She said she’s running because “Fig City’s intern program supports young journalists and gives them an opportunity to get real field experience while providing them an outlet for their voices to be heard. It is so important for young people to have an outlet to share their stories because their voices and opinions are incredibly powerful and important.”
Emily understands the value of internship experiences. She said, “I have personally been so fortunate to have been given opportunities to gain field experience related to my own career, and I know how beneficial it can be to have those experiences as a student. It also means a lot to me to get to support a program that directly works with students from my former high school. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to give back to my community in this way.”
Emily has already run five marathons — in Rhode Island, Texas, and Florida — but not yet Boston! This Patriots Day, Newton can cheer her on. She noted, “I am extremely excited to be running a race through my hometown for the first time. I started getting into running by going up Heartbreak Hill with Newton’s high-school marathon training program, Dreamfar. I am very much looking forward to running the same streets that I fell in love with running on.”
Emily also has significant experience in fundraising — and is already 29% of the way to her goal! All of Newton is invited to contribute to her campaign to support local news in Newton while creating quality summer assignments for aspiring journalists.
