West Newton Cinema is launching a new series — Producer’s Circle — to connect documentary filmmakers with potential donor/producers. Each event in the series will showcase curated clips of a filmmaker’s past work along with rough cuts or assembly edits from the filmmaker’s current documentary project, followed by a Q&A forum. Attendees who are moved by the film and what they hear from the filmmaker can explore opportunities to contribute and become a producer on the film, to help support production and distribution.
The first event in the Producer’s Circle series will be on January 23, when filmmaker Steve Maing will present parts of a work-in-progress, The Great Experiment at 6:15PM, followed by Maing’s completed feature film, High Tech, Low Life, at 7:45PM. (Maing’s recent documentary, Union, about unionization efforts at an Amazon warehouse, is on the shortlist for an Academy Award.)
West Newton Cinema says: “This innovative program blends the excitement of a live pitching forum, the intimacy of a community salon, and the impact of an interactive crowdfunding event to strengthen Boston’s vibrant documentary film scene.” It’s “a one-of-a-kind space where audiences can immerse themselves in the artistry of documentary filmmaking and play an active role in bringing these powerful stories to life.”
West Newton Cinema has scheduled two more Producer’s Circle events:
- March 20 at 6:15PM — Work-in-Progress: The Pneumafractalist by James Rutenbeck, Harmon dot aut, and Sabrina Aviles
- April 17 at 6:15PM — Work-in-Progress: Echoes from Elaine by Franziska Blome and Llewellyn Smith
All will take place at West Newton Cinema (1296 Washington Street, West Newton). Tickets are available online.
