Newton Baroque will host a concert — Newton Baroque: Fantastic Tales – Harpsichord as Narrator in works by Froberger, Kuhnau, Bach and Madsen — on October 20, 4PM-6PM in the astonishingly beautiful St. Elizabeth’s Chapel, a small gem built in 1914 by renowned architect Ralph Adams Cram as his personal family chapel in the woods of Sudbury.
Sitting in this remarkable little sanctuary built in the style of a 12th-century Norman chapel evokes Europe. The 16th-century Spanish altar and the 18th-century Bavarian carving of Elizabeth of Hungary will be the backdrop for harpsichord works that each tell a story. Andrus Madsen will play Kuhnau’s portrayal of the death of Jakob, Froberger’s musical portrayal of a trip on the Rhine gone wrong, and the young J.S. Bach’s Capriccio on the departure of a beloved brother. And Andrus will tell a tale or two of his own, improvising at the keyboard.
Seating and accessibility are limited in the chapel. The chapel is accessed by an unpaved path through the woods. Tickets are available online (General admission: $35, Seniors: $30, Students/Low Income: $10, Under 18 years: $0).
