Traffic Council Report – 6/13/2024

Traffic Council voted (5-0) to approve the following requests (see Report and watch NewTV video):

  • Add an accessible parking space in front of 8 Mechanic Street: To aid a resident with mobility and endurance disabilities. This area is frequently congested by parked cars, complicating accessibility.
  • Add parking prohibition on southwest side of Keyes Street: Due to safety concerns about emergency vehicle access and frequent obstructions caused by vehicles parking on both sides of the street, parking will be prohibited on the southwest side of Keyes Street.
  • Add STOP sign at the T intersection at the end of Adams Avenue at Cherry Street: To enhance safety and clarify right of way, even though it’s typically an implied stop at such intersections.
  • Simplify parking regulations along the east side of Walnut Street: Replacing various time-limited zones with a uniform two-hour parking limit from 7 AM to 7 PM.
  • Add a STOP sign to the Locksley Road eastbound approach to Hereward Road: To improve safety and traffic management.
  • Modify parking time limits in municipal off-street areas and specific street parking regulations: To make permanent the trial to reserve 40 parking meters for Newton Centre employees, allowing them long-term parking.
  • Add a new stop sign at the intersection of Drumlin Road at Dudley Road and at Hartmann Road: Traffic Council generally supports adding stop signs at T intersections, as it provides a small safety benefit and clarifies the right of way.
  • Add a stop sign at the T intersection at the end of Lincoln Road at Crafts Street: To improve traffic safety by clarifying driving responsibilities at the intersection.
  • Officially add two stop signs on Los Angeles Street at its intersection with California Street into the Traffic Parking Regulations: These signs were previously installed by a developer but were not officially recognized in the city’s traffic regulations.

Traffic Council voted (5-0) No Action Necessary on the following request:

  • Increase the number of accessible parking spaces in the Cypress Street Parking Lot: This change was already addressed in a related item, increasing accessible spaces from 2 to 3, and is now properly reflected in city regulations.
