High school sports: Spring wrap-up

Newton South HS

Spring season for Newton South High School’s sports has been filled with many important achievements.

Outdoor Track: This spring season, Outdoor Track continued to perform well. At the New England Championship meet on June 8, Alex Friedman placed sixth in the Boys 1600 meter race. Earlier, at the Meet of Champions on June 1:

  • Liam Sakakeeny, Liam Healy, Nate Hamilton, and Alex Friedman finished third in the Boys 4×800 event and qualified for Nationals.
  • Molly Johnson, Izzy Monaghan, Jasmine Mozaffarian, and Emily Frawley finished third in the Girls 4×800 event and also qualified for Nationals.
  • Alex Friedman beat his 1-mile NSHS record from the previous week with a time of 4:17.25 and placed ninth overall in the Boys mile.
  • Emily Frawley finished third in the 800 meters with a new PR of  2:12.93.

Unified Track: Meanwhile, the Unified Track team won the Division 1 Sectionals and finished third at the All-State meet.

Girls Tennis: Out on the court, the Girl’s Tennis team is seated number 5 in the state and is scheduled to play round 16 on June 5 against Andover High School at Newton South. Athletic Director Patricia Gonzalez says she hopes that the girls will continue to win during the postseason.

All of the teams did well this year, and seven of the Newton South High School sports teams made it to the postseason.

Newton North HS

There is much to be celebrated as Newton North wraps up its spring sports season.

Outdoor Track: In the State Championships, Track athlete Skye Petrie-Cameron came in second in the shot-put, and the Boys Track won the 4×400 event.

Girls and Boys Tennis: Girls and Boys Tennis both had very good seasons with winning records. The Boys Tennis ended the season with 15 wins and 1 loss, while the Girls Tennis ended with 11 wins and 5 losses.

Boys Volleyball: The Boys Volleyball team also did exceptionally well this season, scoring 17 wins and 3 losses.

Boys Tennis, Girls Tennis, Boys Volleyball, Boys and Girls Lacrosse, and Softball made it to the postseason.
