The Public Safety & Transportation Committee voted to Hold:

  • Review of Traffic Data Collected by the Department of Public Works: Discussed with the item below. (6-0)
  • Review of City-Wide Traffic Analysis: Discussed the item below. (6-0)
  • Discussion on Traffic Calming Progress, Plans, and Adequacy of Resources:

The new Director of Transportation described how projects are ranked. Factors included for ranking: Vehicle speeds and volume (# of vehicles on road), Proximity to high pedestrian demand generators (schools, stores, transit stops, etc.), number of crashes and severity, number of crashes involving pedestrians, bicyclists and people using mobility devices. Maps describing these factors are included in the report, along with potential traffic calming measures.

Ongoing TC projects: Albemarle Rd, Brookline St (from Dedham to City line), California St (Bridge St to Dalby St), Chestnut St (Commonwealth Ave to Beacon St), Elliot St (Linden St to Circuit Ave), Langley Rd at Jackson St, Lexington St (River St to Auburndale Ave) and Webster St (Cherry St to Rowe St). 

Top-ranked 5 new streets for TC: Adams St (Washington St to Watertown St), Dedham St (Winchester to Walnut St), Linwood Ave (Crafts St to Adams St), Crafts St (California St to Linewood Ave), Tremont St. City Council and immediate residents will be notified when the design process begins.

TC annual budget is $350,000, plus developer mitigation dollars and competitively awarded Complete St grants. There are 181 projects currently on the TC list. The raised crosswalk at Beethoven Ave by Zervas School cost approximately $375,000. 

Residents can request traffic counts for speed and volume using the 311 app.

The temporary speed bumps on Grant Avenue had installation issues; a different type of temporary speed bump will be installed on Albemarle Road. There is no update on solutions for Grant Avenue. (6-0)
