West Newton Cinema Foundation panel discussion: Killers of the Flower Moon, Nov. 12

The West Newton Cinema Foundation — founded last year to transition the cinema to nonprofit management — will present a free panel discussion: Behind the Screen: Killers of the Flower Moon at the cinema on November 12, 11AM-12:15PM. Register here.

After the discussion, at 12:30PM West Newton Cinema will show the film, which will be ticketed separately through the West Newton Cinema.

The panel will discuss true events that inspired Martin Scorsese’s film adaptation of David Grann’s best-selling book by the same name: The Osage murders, a series of killings in the 1920s targeting members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma due to their substantial oil wealth, prompted FBI involvement at a pivotal moment in the agency’s history and revealed a sinister conspiracy.

Panelists:

  • Emilie Connolly: Assistant professor of Native American history at Brandeis University studying political economy, colonialism, and the Indigenous peoples of North America
  • Denise Cummings: Senior lecturer in film and media studies at Tufts University, whose areas of expertise include Native American and global Indigenous screen cultures, as well as Native literature, Art, and visual culture
  • Malcolm Turvey: Sol Gittleman Professor and founder of film and media studies at Tufts University, known for research on film theory and storytelling
  • Moderator: J.B. Sloan, a member of the West Newton Cinema Foundation, and a member of the Osage Nation
