City Council Meetings – Week of 9/3/2023

The City Council will meet in person (Council Chamber) and virtually (Zoom link) on Tuesday, September 5 at 7:45PM (see Reports Docket and the New Docket). You may also watch it live on NewTV: Comcast 9, RCN 13, 614-HD, Verizon 33, or NewTV’s Youtube channel.

Programs and Services will meet virtually (Zoom link) on Wednesday, September 6 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following:

  • Appointment of Paul Holt and Susan Harvey to the Newton Free Library Board of Trustees
  • Appointment of Sheila Butts to the Parks and Recreation Commission
  • Appointment of John Lovett III to the Commission on Disability
  • Discussion and possible amendment to Section 12-72 “Sustainable Containers, Packaging and Single Use Ordinance” to further reduce the amount of single use plastic in Newton.
  • Reappointments to the Parks and Recreation Commission
    • John Neville, Elizabeth Wilkinson, Byron Dunker, and Arthur Magni
  • Reappointment of John Schwartz to the Biosafety Committee
  • Reappointment of Dina Conlin to the Licensing Board
  • Reappointment of Michael Goldman to the Farm Commission

Public Safety and Transportation will meet virtually (Zoom link) on Wednesday, September 6 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following requests:

  • Increase temporarily the number of sworn firefighters beginning October 1, 2023 through August 1, 2024 from the FY2024 authorized amount of 193 FTEs (Full-Time Equivalents) to 197 FTEs.
  • Discussion with Police, Public Works, and Inspectional Services regarding sidewalk obstruction, enforcement, regulation, and operating procedures during construction used to ensure safety for nonmotorized road users.

Chair’s Note: The Public Facilities Committee will join the Committee to discuss #69-22.

  • Request for a discussion with the Department of Public Works and the Police Department regarding residential and commercial sidewalk snow clearing, operations, and enforcement.
  • Request for a discussion with the administration and school officials on transportation priorities and public works/streets/sidewalks etc.

Public Facilities will meet virtually (Zoom link) on Wednesday, September 6 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following:

  • Public Hearings
    • Request for a water main extension in Washington Street to Dunstan Street
    • Request for a grant of location for installing underground telecommunications conduit and infrastructure crossing Needham Street to serve Newton Northland Development and neighboring community – 201 Needham Street
    • Request for a grant of location to install underground conduit for fiber installation, which includes picking up proposed fiber running along Chestnut Street from a newly installed pole riser at 925 Chestnut Street
    • Request for a grant of location to install approximately 190 feet of underground conduit at 743 Chestnut Street

Chair’s Note: The Committee will join the Public Safety and Transportation Committee to discuss item #69-22.

  • Request for a discussion with the Department of Public Works and the Police Department regarding residential and commercial sidewalk snow clearing, operations, and enforcement.

Zoning and Planning will meet in person (Room 204) and virtually (Zoom link) on Thursday, September 7 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following:

  • Appointment of David Boronkay to the Auburndale Historic District Commission

Chair’s note: The Committee will continue to review and assess the maps and proposed amendments for each village center. Straw votes will be taken on all items.

  • Request for a review, discussion, and possible ordinance amendments relative to Chapter 30 zoning ordinances pertaining to Mixed Use, business districts, and village districts relative to the draft Zoning Ordinance.
  • Request for a discussion on state guidance for implementing the Housing Choice element of the MA Economic Development legislation.
  • Reappointment of John Rice and Doug Cornelius to the Newton Historical Commission
