On Sunday, March 26 at 3PM, the public is invited to a Gala Jimmy Fund Benefit Concert featuring the world premieres of new music commissioned to honor the memory of Sarah Jane Boling. A long-time Newton resident, Sarah passed away March 24, 2022, after a year of battling Glioblastoma, a brain cancer, leaving three children between 9 and 14 years old.
The concert will be available both in-person at Temple Emanuel (385 Ward Street, Newton) and also live-streamed on the Internet. To Fight Glioblastoma
The funds raised from tickets and donations will go into the Glioblastoma Brain Tumor Research Fund at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. “This concert will drive progress to help those battling Glioblastoma, develop lifesaving treatments, and administer groundbreaking clinical trials,” noted Leila Joy Rosenthal, a singer in Zamir, whose mother died of Glioblastoma in 1998. “Every ticket and every donation brings us all closer to a world where Glioblastoma is no longer a life-threatening disease.”
In Memory of Sarah Jane Boling
“Sarah loved making music. She was an alto and played piano and violin. We met through music, and sang together for decades in Zamir,” said Jordan Lee Wagner, her husband. “The commissions were assigned to some of Sarah’s favorite composers, and all the lyrics had special significance for Sarah, who specified the texts that she would like set to music in her memory.”
The Performers
Performing ensembles include The Zamir Chorale of Boston and Koleinu, Boston’s Jewish Community Chorus; and also several fine smaller ensembles. Tickets are available to view the concert either in-person or via live-stream.
“We are thrilled and delighted that so many composers are commissioned to write new music for a single concert,” observed Joshua Jacobson, founder and director of the Zamir Chorale of Boston. There will be eleven new pieces by six composers, including Charles David Osborne, Nick Page, Robbie Solomon and Daniel Gil.
The Artistic Directors of the concert are Joshua Jacobson, Carol Marton, and Elijah Botkin. The players include Bruce Creditor on clarinet; Krista Buckland Reisner on violin; Taki Masuko on percussion; Edwin Swanborn, Lois Shapiro, and Terry Halco on piano; and Norman Rosenfield and Rich Yospin on guitar and bass.
