The Programs & Services Committee voted to hold the following:
- Requesting report as to the implementation of the leaf-blower landscaper registration and enforcement. Commissioner Lojek noted that violators who have received a warning will no longer receive a warning in future registration years. They would immediately be subjected to a fine of $300. Property Owners will be assessed the fine if the landscaper is not registered with the City. Landscaper registration will open on March 15 and will be integrated into the NewGov system.
- Discussion item and possible ordinance amendment regarding processes that could prevent abandoned or condemned properties. The Joint Code Enforcement Taskforce is comprised of Inspectional Services, Health and Human Services, Engineering, Planning, Fire, and Police Departments and will begin meeting again work to ensure each department’s role is clear with regard to code enforcement.
- Discussion regarding Newton’s Economic Stability/Mobility Initiative. The Report notes that this ARPA funded “program was developed as a result of advocacy from members of the Newton Housing Partnership and the results of a Community Needs Assessment.” The program will be run by EMPath. “EMPath’s mission is to transform people’s lives by helping them move out of poverty.” “EMPath will support fifty low-income Newton families with intensive one-to-one Economic Mobility Coaching over the course of two years.” There are no expectations currently for additional funding. Performance metrics are being developed by the City and EMPath.
