What’s Up in Newton – Week of 11/23/2025

Highlights this week…

  • Newton Fair & Affordable Housing Partnership …discussing proposed development at 85 Dudley Road
  • Thanksgiving Day …City offices closed on Thursday

City Council

City Council is not scheduled to meet this week.

Zoning and Planning will meet on regarding possible zoning amendments to:

  • Allow certain routine residential alterations by right for additions to buildings with non-conforming height that do not exceed the existing ridgeline
  • Amend the Inclusionary Zoning Ordinance to include 4–6 units and raise the requirements for the number of affordable units in large developments

Finance Committee will meet on Monday regarding:

  • Request for proposals from outside special counsel to ensure compliance and enforcement of permits at the Turtle Lane site in Auburndale
  • Appropriating $297,400 for design of repairs and rehabilitation of three pump stations
  • Appropriating $325,000 for a comprehensive stormwater infrastructure analysis and plan for the Cheesecake Brook sub-basin
  • Creating a Department of Older Adult Services Gift Account (up to $1,000,000) for affordable programs, events, scholarships, and critical social services for older residents
  • Newton’s Workers’ Compensation Program
  • Workers’ compensation claim filed by Loretta Busa

Land Use will meet on Tuesday regarding Special Permits to:

  • Raze existing two-story commercial building and construct a three-story, four-unit townhouse-style residential dwelling at 1100-1102 Beacon Street
  • Construct a detached garage exceeding the maximum FAR allowed at 12 Garden Road
  • Construct an additional story and new dormers, and to exceed the maximum allowed FAR at 15 Clinton Place
  • Allow a second parking stall in the front setback at 63 Hyde Street
  • Construct a 19-stall non-accessory surface parking lot at 56 Chapel Street

School Committee

School Committee is not scheduled to meet this week.

Schools will let out early on Wednesday and are closed Thursday and Friday.


Boards and Commissions

Newton Fair & Affordable Housing Partnership will meet on Monday to discuss the proposed development for 85 Dudley Road.

Youth Commission will meet on Monday regarding:

  • Parent Step-Up Day proposal from last year’s Youth Commission Advisory Board work
  • December 3 Youth Commission Advisory Board meeting agenda

Council on Aging will meet on Tuesday regarding the Cooper Center Opening on Friday, December 5.
