Traffic Council – 9/11/2025

The Traffic Council approved the following (see the report and watch the meeting video):

  • No Parking any time on the east side of Beaumont Avenue between Prospect Park and Hull St (5-0) to ensure access for buses, trash, recycling, and emergency vehicles.
  • Install Stop Signs (eastbound and westbound) on Cobb Place at Charlesbank Road (4-0-1, Councilor Downs not voting) Resident request to improve control at the intersection after resident and staff observations of rolling movements; Transportation Planning will post the signs via a Traffic & Parking Regulations update.
  • Relocate an accessible parking space on Homer Street by the Newton Free Library (4-0-1, Councilor Downs not voting) Approved as docketed with clarified regulatory language so the signed space better aligns with curb geometry and ADA access.
  • The addition of a stop sign at the end of Radcliff Road where it intersects with Tamworth Road, to clarify right-of-way (4-0-1, Councilor Downs not voting) Resident request.

Items may be appealed through the close of business on October 1, 2025.

The Traffic Council voted No Action Necessary on the following:

  • Howley Avenue request to change parking for emergency, trash, and recycling vehicle access (4-0-1, Councilor Downs abstained) The Fire Department and Director of Sustainable Materials Management support taking no action on the item. Their vehicles have been able to access the road.
  • Islington Road residential parking request (4-0-1, Councilor Downs not voting) to restrict parking on one side or both sides of Islington Road between Commonwealth Ave and Tyder Terrace. After reviewing turnover patterns, adjacent curb use, and enforcement options, members concluded no change was warranted at this time.

The Traffic Council held the following:

  • A trial which may lead to small changes to parking regulations (4-0-1, Councilor Downs not voting) based on the results from various roadway projects across the City, including the following: traffic calming on Elliot Street between Linden Street and Wetherell Street, traffic calming at various points along Webster Street and Lexington Street, a raised intersection at Waverley Avenue/Franklin Street, a raised intersection at Brookline Street/Spaulding Lane/Hartman Road, a bump out at the Commonwealth Avenue/Fuller Street/Day Street intersection, repaving work in the Beacon Street/Langley Road/Sumner Street/Chase Street area, and a DCR project at the Hammond Pond Parkway/Beacon Street/Hobart Road intersection. Held for the trial roadway projects.

The Traffic Council denied the following

  • Resident-only parking near Albert and Roberta (5-0) Members cited equitable access on public ways and the lack of a consistent hardship case.

Voting Members Present: Ned Codd (DPW), Captain Devine (Police), Councilor Downs,
Mitchell Fischman (Resident Member), and David Koses (DPW).
Also Present: Councilors Block and Getz, Margot Spiller (Alternate Resident Member).
