I am writing today to enthusiastically support Julie Irish for Ward 5 Councilor.
City Councilor is often a thankless job, and being a Ward Councilor is perhaps even more so. You are the first call for residents’ problems and expected to have the answers for most issues. A great Ward Councilor needs: a genuine calling for service, responsiveness to residents, and a deep understanding of our schools.
Julie’s calling for service is evident. As a Councilor with the Waban Area Council, I have watched with pride — and some envy — as Julie built a strong sense of community in Newton Upper Falls, as the elected President. The Upper Falls Village Day she organizes is a wonderful example of her ability to bring people together and create a sense of community and belonging for all.
Julie is also incredibly responsive to residents and businesses. When the City’s sidewalk project disrupted Little Luke’s Cafe, Julie fought for that local business. She has also been a steadfast advocate with the City regarding road issues.
Finally, with nearly two-thirds of our City budget dedicated to schools, Julie’s experience is essential. The next City Council will face difficult school budgets decisions. This is where Julie truly shines. As a mother of two children who went through the Newton Public Schools, she understands what’s important. As the former co-president of the Countryside School PTO, she knows how to accomplish goals creatively, even with constrained budgets.
I am thankful that Ward 5 has two well-meaning candidates. With Julie, we know exactly what we are getting: a tireless community builder and an experienced leader who has worked for the betterment of her community.
Please join me in voting for Julie Irish for Ward 5 City Councilor.
