Mazzapica: John Chaimanis is a thoughtful listener, bridge-builder, and leader

As election season reaches its peak, it’s disheartening to see the tone of public discourse surrounding the Ward 4 At-Large race grow so negative. We should be encouraging community-minded residents to step up, not discouraging them through personal attacks and misrepresentations.

John Chaimanis is precisely the kind of candidate Newton should celebrate. He’s a hands-on father of three young children, a devoted son who welcomed his parents into his home during the pandemic, and an entrepreneur whose business actively supports the fight against climate change. Beyond that, he’s an engaged citizen who volunteers his time and expertise to strengthen our community. That’s the kind of integrity and service we should be applauding.

This atmosphere of negativity brings to mind the 2017 election, when another good man and dedicated public servant, Scott Lennon, faced similar treatment. It’s hard not to wonder how much stronger and more unified Newton might be today had we chosen civility and respect over division back then.

If we want good people to continue stepping forward to serve Newton, we need to reject the politics of personal attack and foster a climate of decency and fairness.

Let’s do that now. Let’s show appreciation for those who choose to serve — and elect leaders who listen, collaborate, and care.

Please join me in voting for John Chaimanis — a thoughtful listener, bridge-builder, and leader who will represent Newton with respect and Newton with respect and integrity.
