Alexis de Tocqueville mentioned that the spirit of liberty is especially embodied in local voting in New England towns which he says, “forms the principle and the life of American freedom.” It was heartening to walk through the Newtonville Village Day this week and be reminded of the several contested elections for Mayor, City Council, and School Committee. Let’s be thankful to those people who have put themselves in front of the voters to help us exercise our right to elect our representatives. The candidates have all spent hours and hours before the public to make their case, and now we get to decide — by mail-in, early voting, and at the polls — who will serve us for the coming years. I hope that we will honor the candidates with a turnout commensurate with their efforts.
