I am writing to share my strong support for Mali Brodt for School Committee (running at Large for Ward 6). I have known Mali for several years and can attest that she is thoughtful, smart, and, in this polarized world, truly open to hearing from multiple viewpoints. Mali is a seasoned educator who has taught in both public and private schools, so she understands the school system from the perspective of teachers. As the parent of three daughters in the Newton Public Schools, she also understands the perspective of families. After noticing the sharp decline in middle schoolers’ mental health during COVID, she sought additional training to become a school mental health counselor. In other words, she recognizes the importance of Social Emotional Learning in education. Mali aims to nurture collaboration among the School Committee, the teachers, and the Superintendent, and to rebuild trust between families and Newton educators. Instead of being beholden to Loredo, she plans to use her own experience and expertise to advocate the needs of our students.
I urge everyone to vote for Mali Brodt on (or before) November 4.
Sincerely,
Phoebe Cushman, M.D., M.S.
