West Newton Cinema: The American Dream & The Movies (Subscription Series) – The Pursuit of Happyness, Sept. 18

Join West Newton Cinema (1296 Washington Street) on Thursday, September 18 at 4PM for the first movie (The Pursuit of Happyness) in a monthly curated subscription series — The American Dream & The Movies.

Throughout the past century, Hollywood movies have been a major force in embedding the notion of the American dream in our individual aspirations, our public discourse, and our collective consciousness. They have offered varied perspectives on this very essence of our national self-image—sometimes extolling and sometimes challenging the premises and promises of the dream.

This film series will showcase a range of movies that explore both the hopes and betrayals of the American dream. Screenings will take place once a month on Thursdays at 4:00PM. Each film will be preceded by a brief introduction and will be followed by audience discussion.

Schedule: 8 films, presented once monthly on Thursdays at 4PM. Each film will be preceded by a brief introduction and followed by audience discussion.

The curator and discussion leader:  Prof. Julie Levinson is Professor of Film at Babson College. She has been a film curator for many arts institutions including Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art, the New England Foundation for the Arts, the Boston Film/Video Foundation, the Celebration of Black Cinema, and the Flaherty Film Seminar
