Everyone is invited to this month’s First UU Society free lunch on Sunday, September 14 at noon at FUUSN (1326 Washington Street, West Newton). UU Rev. Jo Murphy, executive director of the UU Mass Action organization will speak about justice work. She will discuss how working for justice under authoritarian rule can be profoundly taxing, leading to exhaustion. All need ways to maintain spirits and energy while working to protect democracy.
Those who work for justice need tools to be effective and not lose hope. Taking meaningful actions, maintaining strong social connections, and engaging in creative expression are just a few of the steps that can provide support while working together toward a positive goal.
More people are looking for ways to protect the nation to be a place for everyone, that supports all to fulfill dreams and sustain the rule of law so that all are treated fairly. Strength is needed to stand up against anyone who would deprive any of hard-fought protections. The talk will discuss how to keep focus and faith for long-term, important goals.
UU Mass Action provides pathways towards justice and identifies opportunities in which all can live shared values. They build relationships with leaders and work to develop their leadership and engage them in statewide campaigns. These are campaigns on climate and economic justice, immigrant justice, housing justice, youth engagement, and more. Every year in April, they lead congregational teams to lobby their state representatives and senators about pending legislation that needs sponsorship and support.
The First Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton (FUUSN) is a congregation with liberal and progressive theology. Founded in 1848, for 177 years, FUUSN has nurtured the spiritualities of its members and helped meet the needs of the greater Newton community
