Ward 6 (Newton Centre) resident, NPS parent, and Newton native Jonathan Greene has announced his candidacy for School Committee in this November’s election for the 2026-2027 term. Mr. Greene will be in a competitive race in Ward 6 versus Mali Brodt, who announced her candidacy in March.
Mr. Greene told Fig City News, “I feel very strongly about my experience in the schools. …It was critical to my ability to get the most out of my NPS education and I think that matters for all students. This is shaping up to be an active and critical School Committee race, one that will be important in getting us past the series of crises we’ve been stuck in, and I’m excited about the potential for the schools and the city of Newton.”
Separately, two new potential Ward 1 (Newton Corner) School Committee candidates have emerged. Christine Gibson and Jonathan Kazakoff-Eigen have each “pulled papers” (ballot nomination papers) with Newton’s City Clerk for this November’s election. Ms. Gibson registered her Statement of Organization with the Newton Election Commission on June 2, and as of this writing Mr. Kazakoff-Eigen did not yet appear on the Election Commission site. Fig City News is not aware of either candidate publicly announcing intention to run, and pulling papers with the City Clerk is not necessarily proof of an intent to run a campaign.
School Committee Chair Chris Brezski (Ward 2, Newtonville and West Newton) told friends and supporters via email late Tuesday night, June 3, that he will not seek a third term on the Committee in this November’s election. See Mr. Brezski’s interview with Fig City News.
