Floyd: Appreciating NPS transparency

Amid all of the national and global tumult, I think parents of Newton Public school students can cheer for a delightful success: added transparency this academic year.

I have multiple kids in the public school system and have really enjoyed receiving the test reports from this year’s STAR and iReady assessments. These now happen three times a year. They show where a child stands in reading and math and how they’re progressing, all with timely results. The transparency is refreshing. Of course, all children have their own journeys and one individual test and report shouldn’t be scrutinized too much. Yet receiving these multiple times a year builds a lot of trust. I don’t think I’ve heard of a parent who dislikes transparency around a child’s education.

We parents know that such reports aren’t easy. They cost money and take time to administer. Special thanks to Dr. Anna Nolan’s leadership and ALL of the teachers and other team members making this happen. I know I’m not alone when I say: “thank you very much and enjoy the summer.”
