Public Facilities Committee Report – April 30, 2025

The Public Facilities Committee voted to approve the following (see report and watch the meeting video):

  • Appropriation of $75,000 in CPA funding for deck replacement at Newton Community Farm (7–0). The existing deck, built in 2010 with CPA funds, has deteriorated due to lack of cover and weather protection. The new design will use Trex composite material and include pressure-treated framing and a roof. Councilors supported the durable redesign and emphasized oversight in construction quality and materials.
  • Appropriation of $189,300 in CPA funding for War Memorial Stairs restoration (7–0). This is Phase I of a larger project to restore and waterproof the stairs and walls, adjusted from the original $214,300 request to exclude staff time. The funding will cover architectural and engineering assessments. Councilors discussed the project’s delay since 2019, the role of opposition and budget uncertainties, and potential accessibility upgrades. Unused Phase I funds may be repurposed for construction.

The Public Facilities Committee voted to hold the following:

  • Appropriation of $2,525,000 for priority school facility projects (6–0; Councilor Danberg absent). The item was held on a motion by Councilor Kelley. Further discussion is expected on the project list and funding scope.
