City Council Meetings – Week of 4/6/2025

City Council will meet in person (Council Chamber) and virtually (Zoom link) on Monday, April 7 at 7:45PM. See Reports Docket and New Docket. The meeting will be broadcast on NewTV’s YouTube channel and government channel (Comcast 9, RCN 13, 614(HD), Verizon 33).

Land Use will meet in person (Council Chamber) and virtually (Zoom link) on Tuesday, April 8 at 7PM. The agenda includes requests for Special Permits/Site Plan Approvals to:

  • Construct a rear addition of two dwelling units resulting in four attached single family dwellings with associated dimensional relief for the building and parking configuration at 75 Prescott Street (See Special Permit documents and Planning Memo)
  • Allow for a change to the configuration of the rear addition which results in a three-story structure at 148 Auburndale Avenue (See Special Permit documents and Planning Memo)
  • Construct a new two-family dwelling exceeding FAR and with over-sized dormers at 71 Commonwealth Avenue (See Special Permit documents and Planning Memo)
  • Introduce a marijuana transporter use to the site, where a marijuana delivery operator currently exists at 16 Maguire Court (See Special Permit documents and Planning Memo)
  • Raze the existing dwelling and construct four attached single-family dwellings with dimensional and parking waivers at 640 Watertown Street (See Special Permit documents and Planning Memo)

Financial Audit Advisory Committee will meet virtually (Zoom link) on Wednesday, April 9 at 8AM. The agenda includes the following:

  • Discuss the FY24 Single Audit Report
  • Vote to send the FY24 Audit Report to the Finance Committee
  • Discuss plan for FY25 Audit
  • Questions/Concerns

Public Facilities will meet in person (Room 204) and virtually (Zoom link) on Wednesday, April 9 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following:

  • Request the Department of Public Works to provide an update on the Transportation Network Improvement Plan.

Programs and Services will meet in person (Room 211) and virtually (Zoom link) on Wednesday, April 9 at 7PM. The agenda includes the following:

  • Two appointments:
    • Rabbi Keith Stern as a Newton Library Trustee
    • Michelle Howard-Sparks to the Institutional Biosafety Committee
  • Recommendation by the Election Commission to approve the date of Tuesday, September 9, 2025 as the date for the 2025 Preliminary Election, if needed
  • Request for a resolution to formally recognize the Newton Cultural Council
  • Request for an update on leaf-blower landscaper registration and enforcement ordinance

Public Safety and Transportation Committee‘s regularly scheduled meeting has been canceled (see Meeting Cancellation Notice).

Rules Subcommittee will meet virtually (Zoom link) on Thursday, April 10 at 6PM. The agenda includes the following:

  • Development of a code of conduct for the City Council
  • Continued discussion on balancing the workload among Committees
  • Requiring presentations to be submitted 48 hours prior to a meeting
  • Potential changes to budget meeting process

Traffic Council will meet virtually (Zoom link) on Thursday, April 10 at 7PM. The agenda includes requests to:

  • Designate Linwood Avenue, from Crafts Street to Nevada Street, as a school zone for the Horace Mann School.
  • Add stop signs on River Street, eastbound and westbound, at the intersection of Auburndale Avenue, to create an all-way stop-controlled intersection.
  • Change the parking regulations on the block of Norwood Avenue between Parkview Avenue and Bridges Avenue.
  • Extend the parking zone on the north side of Beacon Street from Holly Road (where parking currently terminates) to a point further west, along a portion of the frontage of 1915 Beacon Street.
  • Update the Traffic and Parking Regulations to reflect all of the changes associated with the reconstruction of Needham Street.
  • Create a “no turn on red” restriction on Walnut Street northbound at Commonwealth Avenue.
  • Create a “right lane must turn right” restriction on Commonwealth Avenue eastbound at Day Street and Fuller Street.
