STEM successes: LigerBots and Oak Hill MathCounts

Both the LigerBots — Newton’s dual-high-school robotics team — and the Oak Hill MathCounts Club competed this weekend with impressive results.

The LigerBots competed at the Granite State District FRC competition February 28-March 2 in Salem, New Hampshire, reaching the finals and winning the Autonomous Award. In this first competition of the season, the team placed 4th in the Qualifier round and was the first pick of Alliance 2 for the Alliance round. With Alliance 2, the Ligerbots made it to the finals and finished 2nd overall. In another part of the competition, the LigerBots robot won the Autonomous Award for excellent automation control. The last time the LigerBots won that award was 10 years ago. Here are photos of the event.

Oak Hill MathCounts Club

The Oak Hill Middle School MathCounts Club participated in the MathCounts Massachusetts State Competition on March 1, which drew 123 students from 43 schools. The Oak Hill team (Allie Baskakova, Natalie Qin, Joshua Tang, and Claire Yuan) finished in 4th place among the 21 school teams — an historical best result for Oak Hill.

Two students on the team, Allie Baskakova and Joshua Tang, placed in the top 25% of all participants. Allie finished in 14th place, missing the prestigious Countdown round on a tie break, and Joshua placed 22nd.

The team had qualified advanced for the State Competition by placing 2nd in the MathCounts MetroNorth Chapter Competition. The Oak Hill team is coached by Newton South HS students Steven Hu, Isaac Gordon, and Jared Mi.
